The Fool and the Major Arcana: What Each Pairing Means in Tarot

The Fool is my favourite card to find in a spread. There is something about it that makes me smile every single time. It carries this beautiful, almost reckless energy, like standing at the edge of something unknown and choosing to leap anyway.

The Fool is number zero in the Major Arcana, which tells you everything. It exists before the journey begins. It is potential, innocence, spontaneity, and trust. When it appears in a reading, something new is stirring. A door is opening.

But what happens when The Fool appears alongside another Major Arcana card? That is where things get really interesting. The Fool colours every pairing with its signature energy: openness, risk, and the courage to begin.

Let’s explore what each combination means.

The Fool + The Magician

You have everything you need to begin, and you know it. This pairing says stop waiting and start doing. Confidence meets possibility, and the timing feels right even if it looks a little wild from the outside.

The Fool + The High Priestess

Trust what you cannot yet see. Something is guiding you beneath the surface. This combination asks you to begin the journey with intuition as your compass rather than a map.

The Fool + The Empress

A beautiful, nurturing beginning. New creative projects, relationships, or even pregnancy can be indicated here. It feels abundant and warm, like planting a seed in rich soil.

The Fool + The Emperor

Structure supports the leap. This pairing suggests that your new beginning has a solid foundation beneath it, even if it does not feel that way yet. Someone grounded may be guiding or supporting you.

The Fool + The Hierophant

Beginning a spiritual or traditional path. This could mean starting a course of study, exploring a belief system, or saying yes to a commitment that carries deeper meaning. It asks you to honour the wisdom of what came before.

The Fool + The Lovers

A new relationship or a bold choice in love. The heart is open and the timing feels significant. This pairing often appears when someone is about to take a real chance on love, perhaps for the first time in a long while.

The Fool + The Chariot

Moving fast. This combination carries momentum and drive. You are not just beginning, you are already moving. Trust the direction even if the destination is not fully clear.

The Fool + Strength

Gentle courage. You are stepping into something new not through force but through quiet self-belief. This pairing reminds me that bravery does not always look loud.

The Fool + The Hermit

A solo journey begins. This may be a period of inner exploration, travel alone, or choosing to start something quietly without sharing it with the world yet. There is wisdom in going inward first.

The Fool + Wheel of Fortune

Fated beginnings. Something is turning in your favour and the universe is inviting you to ride the wave. This feels like divine timing, the kind you look back on later and call a turning point.

The Fool + Justice

Beginning with integrity. This pairing asks you to step forward honestly and with clarity about your intentions. It can also suggest a new chapter following a fair resolution or decision.

The Fool + The Hanged Man

A pause before the leap. You are almost ready but something asks you to wait, to see things from a different angle before you move. This combination is not a no. It is a not yet.

The Fool + Death

One of my favourite pairings. Something had to end so this new beginning could exist. The Fool here is rising from the ashes, full of life and completely unafraid of what comes next.

The Fool + Temperance

A balanced beginning. You are not rushing. You are not forcing. You are stepping forward with patience and grace, and that is exactly what this new chapter needs.

The Fool + The Devil

Watch what you are stepping into. This combination can suggest beginning something with an unhealthy attachment already present, or a situation that looks exciting but may bind you. It asks for awareness alongside the adventure.

The Fool + The Tower

A beginning born from chaos. Something may have fallen apart, and now The Fool is standing in the rubble choosing to walk forward anyway. This is raw, brave, and often deeply necessary.

The Fool + The Star

One of the most hopeful pairings in the deck. You are beginning again with your heart full of faith. Whatever happened before, you have not lost your belief in what is possible. This is a beautiful card combination to receive.

The Fool + The Moon

Beginning something while things are still unclear. You may not have all the answers and that is okay. The Moon here asks you to walk forward through the uncertainty rather than wait for full clarity that may never come.

The Fool + The Sun

Pure joy in a new beginning. Everything feels bright, open, and full of possibility. This pairing is a resounding yes from the universe. Go. Begin. Enjoy every step.

The Fool + Judgement

A calling. This combination often appears when someone is starting something that feels bigger than just a personal decision. There is a sense of purpose here, like the beginning is part of a larger awakening.

The Fool + The World

Completion becomes a new beginning. You have come full circle and now you are ready to start the journey all over again, but this time with everything you have learned. This is the most beautiful kind of beginning there is.

How I See The Fool in My Readings

To me, The Fool is never foolish. That name has always felt a little unfair. When I see this card appear in a reading, I feel excitement. I feel possibility. I feel the universe nudging someone forward.

When The Fool sits next to another Major Arcana card, I look at what energy is being invited into that new beginning. Is it love? Structure? Chaos? Transformation? The Fool absorbs the energy around it and runs with it, wide-eyed and willing.

This card reminds me that every single one of us began as The Fool at some point. And honestly, some of the best things in life start with a leap we were not entirely sure about.
